Lyra Summer Music launched its first workshop in Randolph, Vermont in the summer of 2010, which was hosted jointly by Chandler Center for the Arts and Vermont Technical College. Nine students from New York City and Vermont spent two weeks working intensely with a faculty of four teachers, and two guest artists. In addition to daily instruction, music classes, ensemble work, and hours of supervised practice, the students performed at Bethany Church, the Senior Center in Randolph, and Chandler Music Hall. Faculty, students, parents, and locals of Randolph witnessed the outstanding progress of the participants. This year, Lyra will be accepting a maximum of thirty students. Students of all ages and levels who play piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass are invited to participate. Curriculum includes, private lessons, chamber ensembles and coaching, master classes with distinguished guest artists, group classes (i.e music theory, instrumental literature, ear-training, etc.), and supervised practice time. Lyra Summer Music will hold faculty concerts, guest artist performances, and student concerts at Chandler. Co-director and piano faculty, Mary Prescott is hailed as a pianist with “great sensitivity… good sense of line, drama, and poetry.” An ambitious pianist and an accomplished educator, she holds a BM in piano performance from the University of Minnesota and a MM in piano performance from the Manhattan School of Music. Mary Prescott has run a successful private studio for over 10 years. In addition, she has held faculty positions at the Louisiana Chamber Music Institute, Goppisberger Music Festival in Switzerland, the Larchmont Music Academy, and Great Neck Music Conservatory. Pianistically, her skills are considered to be on the vanguard of the New York scene. Prescott’s repertoire ranges from works by Beethoven and Schubert to Rzewski and Cowell. Co-director and piano faculty, Akiko Sasaki is considered one of the premier music educators and performers in New York City. Having attained a BM in piano performance from the University of Denver and a MM in piano performance from the Manhattan School of Music, she went on to establish the successful Forte>piano Studio in Brooklyn, NY. Sasaki also holds a faculty position at the Lucy Moses School, NYC’s only public school for the performing arts. In addition, Akiko Sasaki founded Musical Explorers and Performing Pianists of New York, two organizations dedicated to furthering musical education and fostering performance opportunities for young piano students. Sasaki has performed in venues such as Merkin Hall, Tenri Cultural Institute, and gave her solo debut at Carnegie Hall in 2006. She has been awarded the New York City Artist International Award and the New York Distinguished Artist Award. Violin and viola faculty, Andrew Eng, has gained a versatile reputation playing such diverse genres as Baroque, Classical, Tango, Jazz and Contemporary music. A founding member of A Far Cry Chamber Orchestra, and Kalistos Chamber Orchestra of Boston, Mr. Eng also played as the principal violinist for MASS Tango, the Chagall-Boston String Quartet, the Found Objects Jazz String Trio of Boston, and the Chatham string trio. Engagements as featured soloist include performances with the Hart House Orchestra of Toronto, Cornell Symphony Orchestra, and the Lyrica Chamber Orchestra. In 2006, Eng joined the faculty of LyricaFest, a summer music festival in New Jersey. In 1998, Andrew received his A.R.C.T. Performer’s Certificate from the Royal Conservatory in Toronto, Canada, and then in 2003 and 2005 respectively received his Undergraduate Diploma and Master of Music at the Longy School of Music as a student of Laura Bossert and Peter Cassino. Cello Faculty, Jody Redhage holds degrees from the Manhattan School of Music (MM) and the University of California Berkeley (BM). In addition to maintaining private studios in Brooklyn, NY, and in South Orange, NJ, Redhage is Co-Artistic Director of Lyrica Chamber Music, and teaches at Elm City Chamber Fest in New Haven, CT, and the Brooklyn Symphony Youth Orchestra’s summer camp. Redhage has performed in such venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Radio City Music Hall, BAM Opera House and the Whitney Museum. As a professional cellist, Redhage’s wide variety of musical interests have led her to work with composers including George Crumb, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley, and to performances with members of the Tokyo String Quartet, Neil Diamond, Jay-Z, Beyonce, the Roots, and Sufjan Stevens, to name a few. Jody has appeared on “Conan O’Brien,” "The View," "The Early Show," "The Today Show,” and the “Rockefeller Christmas Spectacular,” and her own compositions and playing have been aired on NPR stations countrywide. The Lyra Summer Music faculty members were all very pleased with the outcome of the 2010 workshop and look forward to working with the students and performing for the community in the summer of 2011.
