Activities for Arild Vatn – Thor Heyerdahl professorship August 2009 – August 2010
My work from August 2009 - August 2010 has concentrated on continuing previous activities – see report from 2008-2009 – and deepening some of my engagements (see appendix for details). Concerning the latter, three main issues should be mentioned:
- Further development in climate research activities. This concerns developing the second
phase of the project ‘Poverty and sustainable development impacts of REDD architecture; Options for equity, growth and the environment’. Financing is now secured for 3 more years (about 12 mill. NOK split on 7 partners, about 3 mill. for Noragric). The project is lead by IIED (London). Noragric/I is responsible for the pilot area studies, which is the largest part of the project. Data collection in 5 REDD pilot areas has started – i.e., in Brazil, Ghana, Tanzania, Uganda and Vietnam. From Noragric also Darley Kjosavik, Synne Movik and Pål Vedeld participate.
- The establishment of the Noragric ‘Governance and Climate Change cluster’. I took the
initiative to the establishment and I am also currently its leader.
- Establishing a new course in ‘International environmental governance’ at master level.
I have also been engaged in further development of the plans for a ‘Thor Heyerdahl summer school in Environmental governance’. The school is planned as a PhD course to be run once a year. The idea behind the school is to bring renowned national and international researchers to work with a selected group of PhD students/young researchers from all over the world. A program for the first three years is sketched and cooperation with Cicero and FNI is established. It has been more difficult than expected to secure financial support for the school. We are now working for running it for the first time in June 2011. It should be noted that Nobel laureate Elinor Ostrom has already accepted to attend as speaker. I should also mention that I in 2009-2010 served as a member of a governmental committee on developing plans for future climate research in Norway. Details on teaching, publications and conference presentations etc. are given in the appendix. A few things should be emphasized. First I have experienced increased number of invitations to deliver key note addresses at international conferences. The most interesting for me was an invitation to give a talk together with the Nobel laureates in economics (of 2009) at a confer-ence arranged at the University of Delft (May 2010). Second, and as mentioned already in my last report, I have made agreements with two international publishers – Edward Elgar and Routledge – on book projects. The progress here has not been good so far. I have made some arrangements for 20111, so that I hope to finish one of the books by the end of that year. The second is now scheduled for 2012. It should maybe also be noted that the number of master

students under my supervision was very large this last year (7). It is not a ‘sustainable’ level for the future. Finally, I would mention that I was awarded the prize for the ‘best Noragric educator 2009’ by Noragric students.
