Brabender and Mühlenchemie agree on cooperation
Press Release
, Ahrensburg, Duisburg, March 23, 2009: Mühlenchemie and Brabender work together in the
application technology of the milling- and baking-industries – Bundled know-how leads to fast problem solving
and to offer millers and bakers a knowledge fund.
The German flour specialist Mühlenchemie GmbH & Co. KG, Ahrensburg (ICC Corporate Member since 2002),
and the manufacturer of laboratory instruments Brabender GmbH & Co. KG, Duisburg (ICC Corporate Member
since 1993) agreed on cooperation by offering joint customer assistance concerning dough rheological problems
in Germany, Russia, Mexico, China, and India. More…
Romer Labs reacts to global acetonitrile shortage
Press Release
, Tulln, Austria: Romer Labs (ICC Corporate Member since 2006) with its three Research Centers
based in Austria, USA, and Singapore has reacted to the current acetonitrile shortage and has released alternative
HPLC methods for the analysis of mycotoxins with their clean-up products that are based on methanol instead of
acetonitrile. These alternative methods are all fully validated and are equivalent to the acetonitrile based standard
methods. These new methanol-based methods completely avoid acetonitrile or use extremely low amounts of
acetonitrile. Recently, independent events accentuated a global acetonitrile shortage, like the shut-down of
production in China due to the Olympics, the damage to a acetonitrile plant in Texas due to Hurricane Ike, and
finally, due to the severe economic slowdown that reduced the need for acrylic fibers (Acetonitrile is a byproduct
of that process). More…

MoniQA News
New Zealand: 9th MoniQA FST in Christchurch, New Zealand - Report
ESR, one of MoniQA’s core partners in New Zealand, hosted the 9th MoniQA FST (Food Scientist Training)
entitled “Modern methods for monitoring food quality and safety”, 23 - 28 March 2009, in Christchurch, New
Zealand.
Fifteen delegates from China, New Zealand, Vietnam and the UK participated in the workshop including topics
such as “International Accreditation NZ (IANZ) – QA compliance and inter-laboratory comparisons” and
“Melamine: from scandal to analysis – a tale of two molecules”. There was also a laboratory demonstration of
the melamine extraction protocol used at ESR as well as a technical seminar explaining the “Principles of PCR
analysis in foods”. The workshop was complemented with lectures on risk analysis, risk modelling, and risk
communication.
MoniQA Alerts
MoniQA’s Working Group on Emerging Food Safety Issues in collaboration with MoniQA’s Dissemination
Programme keep posting news alert and fact sheets on MoniQA’s website at www.moniqa.org. The latest
updates are:
Maximum limits for 4-Methylbenzophenone or Benzophenone
The European Commission sets maximum levels for food packaging printed with inks containing 4-
Methylbenzophenone or Benzophenone. After the detection of 4-methylbenzophenone in a Belgian chocolate
crunch muesli product the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) was tasked by the European Commission to
undertake a risk assessment. 4-methylbenzophenone is used in printing inks and appears to have migrated into
the cereal from external cardboard packaging. More at http://www.moniqa.org/news.
Canada may add acrylamide to its toxic substance list
Health Canada has recommended that acrylamide is included in the nation’s list of toxic substances.
Acrylamide is a chemical produced when starchy foods, like potatoes, are cooked at high temperatures to
produce products such as chips (French fries) or crisps (potato chips). Acrylamide is a suspected carcinogen and
though the mode of action of induction of tumours is not fully understood, the recommendation has been made
by Health Canada because current consumption levels may constitute a danger to human life or health. More at
http://www.moniqa.org/news.
Melamine crisis not over yet
The Indonesian Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) has confirmed fears that certain Chinese-based
foods sold in Indonesia contain the toxic ingredient melamine, citing six registered and six illegal products in
circulation in the country. For more information please visit http://www.moniqa.org/melamine.
EC to increase nitrate limits in spinach, lettuce and rocket
European Commission proposals for permanent increases to the existing limits for spinach and lettuce laid down
in Commission Regulation 1881/2006 emerged at the end of last year, as temporary derogations permitting the
UK and some other Northern European countries to exceed these maximum limits (for consumption on their own
respective territories) came to an end. The increased limits for nitrate levels are unlikely to come into force until
later in 2009, however. More information at http://www.moniqa.org/news.
Hormones in Bottled Water?
A recent study by Wagner and Oehlmann (2009) has analysed commercially available mineral water and
detected estrogenic contamination in 60 percent of all samples. Estrogens function as the primary female sex
hormones. The authors conclude that consumption of mineral water may therefore contribute to the overall
exposure of humans to endocrine disruptors (substances that interfere with the endocrine system). It is probable
that this estrogenic contamination originates from plastic food packaging materials because water bottled in glass
was less affected. More information at http://www.moniqa.org/news.
