Laser Peel Resurfacing What is Laser Peel resurfacing?
Erbium Laser Peel resurfacing is a superficial resurfacing treatment which is a less aggressive procedure than full resurfacing. It gently, over a series of treatments erases wrinkles, pigmented lesions and other irregularities in the epidermis and dermis .
What is the treatment for and where can it be performed?
This treatment can be performed on most areas of the body and is used to treat fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, poor skin texture, scars and skin laxity. It is usually thought of as two treatments in one. The first part is ablative which yields smoother skin with less lines, wrinkles and texture problems. The second part of the treatment is the creation of collagen. This is equally important but takes about 4-6 months to see the tightening affects of increased collagen. The most common treatment areas are the face, neck, chest, hands and arms.
Is it painful?
It is considered a treatment that produces heat and mild pain much like the sting of a sun burn. Depending on the intensity you choose to have, we sometimes use topical anesthetics to make you comfortable during and after the treatment. When the treatment is over it feels like a sun burn that gradually calms down over a few hours.
How long does the treatment take?
When you arrive, the treatment and the post treatment protocol will again be reviewed along with your photos. All questions will be answered and topical anesthetic over the area(s) to be treated will be applied for more aggressive Laser Peels. The treatment usually starts about one hour after the topical is applied and takes about one to two hours to treat the face, neck and chest depending on intensity and number of passes.
What kind of results can I expect?
The results of all treatments vary from patient to patient, however, most patients experience smoother, tighter and more evenly colored skin over a series of treatments.
How long do the results last?
Depending on your age and lifestyle, the results from the treatment of fine lines can last many years. It is important to remember that you are still aging. The aging process, genetics and sun exposure all play a part in the longevity of the treatment. With a healthy lifestyle and a minimum amount of direct sun exposure the results can be lasting, but we still age. We have many treatments for aging skin that helps produce more collagen. As with anything, the more you do the less your skin seems to age.

The immediate response following treatment is usually redness of the treated skin. The redness can start to turn brown within 48 hours. Moderate pain, much like the sting of a severe sunburn, may occur after the treatment, but usually subsides that evening. Swelling is a typical occurrence of the treatment but usually does not last more than a day or two. Swelling is important part of the inflammatory process that stimulates the production of collagen. Following the treatment a cold hydrating mask is applied to the skin for 60 minutes while cooling with a Zimmer cold air device. This reduces any pain and enhances the recovery time. The masks will be sent home with you to apply once/day to speed up your recovery. Additionally, over the next week we schedule a Red Light Therapy treatment to reduce swelling and redness. On day 3 or 4 you can expect to start flaking (like dandruff). The outer layer of skin will flake off completely in four days after the procedure and be replaced by a new layer of smooth, pink skin. This new skin may be noticeably pink at first and be pink for up to two weeks after the treatment. While pain is unusual after the first day, your skin can feel tight, dry, and itchy for the first two days.
What you do at Home You will be called each day for the first few days after your treatment to see how you are doing and to answer any question you may have.If we have not been successful reaching you please be sure to contact us each day. We will hopefully be seeing you during the first week to evaluate your skin and to aid your healing with the LED light therapy. You will be given a Post Treatment Kit to take home that includes everything you need to heal nicely. The kit has the step by step instructions along with the products we want you to use until your skin has completely peeled or flaked off. Pain: Severe pain is uncommon and should be reported to our office. The typical discomfort can be alleviated with the application of BioKool, an ice pack, frozen peas (best in a plastic zipper-lock freezer bag), and/or over-the –counter analgesics such as Aleve or Advil as needed. Swelling: To reduce swelling, sleep with your head elevated on several pillows or preferably, in a reclining chair for 1-2 days. Ice packs used frequently over the treated area in the first day following the treatment will help reduce swelling along with oral (over the counter) Benadryl . Advil PM contains Benadryl which helps you sleep, but also reduces swelling. By adding Zantac twice per day (am/pm) it helps the Benadryl work better to reduce swelling. Shaving: Men should shave only with an electric razor for the first 2 weeks. The skin is too sensitive and difficult to shave with a blade. Exercise and bathing: Mild physical exercise is permitted, but avoid any activity that will result in heavy perspiring until day 5. No swimming for the first week. After washing your hands, you may wash, or shower normally and gently massage the areas treated with the cleanser. Avoid over-scrubbing the treated area so as not to irritate the new skin unnecessarily (BE GENTLE). Do not be alarmed if you see a spot of bleeding. Gently pat dry with a clean towel. Diet: It is advisable to eat lightly for a day following the Erbium Laser Peel Resurfacing. If your mouth area has been treated, eat a soft diet or use a straw, particularly if the skin around the mouth is swollen. Avoid alcohol for the first week. Sun Protection: Avoid exposure to the sun entirely for the first two to three weeks following the procedure. Thereafter, the skin needs to be protected with a sunscreen rated 30 SPF or above. Itching: If the treated skin itches, apply BioKool or Hydrocortisone. You may find the BioKool helps to alleviate itching. Make-up: Generally, make-up can be used after your skin flakes. Advise Us Immediately If You Experience: Excessive pain and tenderness of the treated areas, fever, an outbreak of fever blisters around the lips, or anything else that has not been discussed or seems unusual to you.
