GRAND NATIONAL COMBO Walkenny Park PRODUCT INFORMATION SHEET ALFALFA - Alfalfa is high in pectin, proteins, enzymes and amino acids. It contains vitamins A, B1, B2, C and K and useful amounts of potassium, magnesium, copper, cobalt and iron. Alfalfa is useful for regulating an over- active acidic and gassy digestive system, thus regulating the over production of mucus treating the over activity in the nervous and immune systems, reducing sensitivity to insect bites. Alfalfa is fed by putting a handful of the dried herb into a jug and pouring boiling water over it. Al ow this to cool and then dampen the feed with it. The tea can also be sprayed on to an animal after hosing down to soothe insect bites. ALOE VERA – Excel ent healer, good for skin conditions, soothes bites, stings, burns, blisters and welts. Not to be used internal y or on pregnant mares. Aloe Vera seals burnt, damaged or irritated skin from the air and promotes healing giving almost instant relief. ALOE VERA SHAMPOO – Produces a clean, soft, shiny coat. Also great for removing stains from grey and white horses. ARNICA – Great for bruising, but only on wounds that don’t have broken skin. It is only used external y as either a cream , ointment or oil Good pain reliever. Can only be used internal y as homeopathic treatment to treat an animal suffering from shock. BEARBERRY LEAVES (aka UVA URSI) – Urinary antiseptic that relieves inflammation and infection of the bladder and urinary tract. Don’t use long term and if the horse has repeated urinary tract infections. Feed 1 handful daily to a horse 450kg body weight. BORAGE – is a valuable source of mineral salts, especial y sodium, potassium, and calcium. Borage is the best tonic for the competition horse in work as a regulator of adrenal reserves, temperature control and source of natural electrolytes, particularly potassium nitrate. Feed 1 cup daily mixed in to other feeds. BLACK SUNFLOWER SEEDS – High in vitamin E. Activates immune cel s and inhibits inflammation. Usual y provides enough oil and protein for most horses when fed in moderate amounts. 1 cup daily to a horse approximately 450kg weight. BLEEDER MIX – A non-swabbable mix to help strengthen and repair capil aries that can break down and cause a bleeding attack. 1 handful daily to a horse 450kg weight. BUZZ OFF – Bot and insect spray, excel ent for keeping away flies, mosquitoes and ticks. Spray directly onto the horses body and legs. DO NOT SPRAY AROUND THE HORSES NOSTRILS AND EYES. BREWER’S YEAST – Is very high in B vitamins. The B vitamins in brewer’s yeast are B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B9 (folic acid) and H (biotin). These vitamins help break down carbohydrates, fats and proteins, which help the body with energy. They also support the nervous system, help to maintain the muscles used for digestion and promote the health of skin, hair, eyes, mouth and liver. Feed approximately ¼ cup daily depending on size of animal. CANINE MUSCLE/JOINT FORMULA – Good for dogs of al ages. 1 teaspoon fed as a tea that can be mixed with their feed daily. CALENDULA – Great as an antiseptic wash or ointment, for cuts and wounds of al kinds. Removes inflammation, prevents scarring and restores nerve function. Not to be used internal y unless on strict professional advice. CELERY SEEDS – These are excel ent for horses suffering with arthritis or are prone to tying up. It is also a mild diuretic and urinary antiseptic with warming effects so it is great for horses that have suffered a chil in the kidneys and often feel the cold. Feed ¼ to ½ cup daily depending on size of animal. CHAMOMILE – Used as a sedative for reducing nervous tension or excitement. Can be swabbable if being tested for. Feed 1 handful daily to a horse 450kg weight, may be doubled prior to competition or if horse is extremely nervous. COLD PRESSED LINSEED OIL - Has the ability to retention stretched ligaments and relax tight or shortened ligaments. Linseed improves the colour and shine of your horses coat, as wel as helping to lubricate a dry bowel. NERVINE MIX (CHAMOMILE/MUGWORT)- Herbs used to help settle the nervous system of horses and ponies who become quite loose in their manure when they have a nervous attack to different sights, sound and noises that they are exposed to. Feed 1 handful daily to a horse 450kg weight, may be doubled prior to competition or if horse is extremely nervous. NERVOUS NED MIX (CHAMOMILE/MUGWORT/VERVAIN) – A herb mix used to settle the nervous system of horses or ponies who become quite loose in their manure when they have a nervous attack to different sights, sounds and noises that they are exposed to. With Vervain added it is excel ent for those horses who sweat a lot because they are nervous and who do not like to be left by themselves, often resulting in them walking the fence lines. Feed 1 handful daily to a horse 450kg weight, may be doubled prior to competition or if horse is extremely nervous. CHASTETREE BERRIES – Used to treat mares that exhibit great discomfort and erratic, bitchy behaviour when they are in season but have a normal cycle pattern. Treatment is usual y only required for one cycle. Feed approximately 1 cup daily depending on horses size vary accordingly. CIDER VINEGAR – Is very high in organic acids, is a proven arthritic treatment and helps reduce acid build up. Feed approximately 60ml to 1 cup daily diluted in water depending on horses size CLIVERS – Very high in silica, useful lymphatic system stimulant and an antiseptic herb for geldings and stal ions for resolving infection in the genito-urinary tract. Use internal y on professional advice as there are many herbs to treat the urinary system. Feed approximately 2 -3 tablespoons daily. COD LIVER OIL – High in vitamins A and D. Arthritis preventative. Almost identical in composition to Fenugreek, so observe for behavioural changes if feeding to mares. Feed approximately 60ml daily depending on horses size. COLLOIDAL SILVER – Good water cleanser, said to have antibiotic properties and good for infections. Used on wounds external y as wel as being fed internal y. Can also be used as an eye wash. Often used when antibiotics wont work and has proven to be very successful. Feed approximately 10 to 20ml x 2 daily COMFREY, CALENDULAH & HONEY CREAM – Used to heal cuts and wounds. Reduces the risk of scar tissue, proud flesh and arthritis. Helps to promote new hair growth. COMFREY LEAVES –Used for healing, which is high in vitamin B12. Very good for healing injuries to bones, tendons, cartilage, soft tissue, ulcers and wounds. Feed 1 handful daily to a horse 450kg weight. DANDELION LEAVES - Dandelion is an alterative herb, liver tonic and cleanser, improves the metabolism, balances digestion and is also tonic for kidneys, spleen and bladder. It is high in Sodium, Potassium, Magnesium and Calcium and is therefore as a natural electrolyte. It is also high in Choline, Iron, Silica, Sulphur, Vitamins A and D. Dandelion is used as a liver tonic, in the treatment and prevention of tying – up, detoxification, rehabilitation from il ness and as part of a mixture to improve general health and wel being. DEVIL’S CLAW – Great for it’s anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties especial y in the musculo-skeletal system. Herbal alternative to “Bute”, without the side effects. It also stimulates healing. Not for use on pregnant mares or where gut ulceration is present or suspected. Feed 2 to 3 tablespoons daily depending on size of horse. DOLOMITE – Is extremely good for producing strong bones, teeth and hooves. It is a natural form of calcium combined with magnesium. Best fed in conjunction with seaweed meal. Feed 2 tablespoons daily. Increase dosage to mares that a feeding foals. ECHINACEA – A fighter of bacterial and viral infections. It is widely used as a disease preventative and immuno-stimulant. Feed 1 handful daily. This herb contains copper, cobalt and iron as wel as inulin and several fatty acids. ELECAMPAGNE - This is a antiseptic respiratory herb for horses. Elecampagne is used in the treatment of al respiratory infections coughing and al ergies affecting the lungs. . It is very helpful in healing weak and scarred lungs to remove old infective material and mucus and as part of a mixture to treat bleeders. Elecampagne is soothing due to its high mucilage content, it is the highest plant source of inulin and also contains Al antion. EQUISOY Equisoy is 100% Ful Fat Debittered Soy Flour which is easy to digest and wil help with weight gain. High in essential fatty acids, phytoestrogens and is natural y rich with a sweet buttermilk taste. Recommended feeding rates for a 500kg horse feed 1/4 to ½ cup X 2 daily mixed into their feed. FENNEL – Is a herb uses to treat the pancreas a organ vital y concerned with the metabolism. Fennel works wel balancing horses with poor appetites and or feed conversion difficulties as wel as digestive problems. Fennel seeds can also be used as part of a worming mixture. FENUGREEK – High in vitamins A and D with almost identical composition to cod liver oil. It is recommended as a herb to temp picky eaters and improve general body condition. Fenugreek is high in oestrogen so do not feed to mares who are in good to fat condition or who may have a hormonal imbalance, as it may cause flirtatious behaviour. Start with a little and only increase to no more that 20grams daily. FRENCH WHITE MILLET – Is very high in silica. Without silica calcium cannot strengthen bones, hooves or condition hair and skin. Silica is good for the treatment and prevention of arthritis. Feed 1 cup daily soaked in water to soften seeds. GARLIC – A natural form of sulphur. Is used as an antibiotic for fighting bacteria, colds and coughs. It is also effective against hookworms, tapeworms, pinworms and aids in the deterrence of external parasites and insects. Feed 2 tablespoons daily to a hprse 450kg weight. Increase in the horse is sick. GINKGO - A herb used with Buckwheat and Lime Blossom is extremely useful for strengthening blood vessels. Excel ent to be fed to race horses to help prevent bleeding. Also is good to feed to horses who are returning to work after a long spel . GINGER POWDER – Great for travel sickness and nausea in dogs. Feed 1 to 2 tablespoons daily. Depending on size of animal. GLUCOSAMINE POWDER - Glucosamine is an essential building block in the formation of articular cartilage. A vital precursor to the synthesis of col agen and the production of hyaluronic acid. (HA). A major component of synovial fluid (joint capsule lubricant). Glucosamine is idea for the older horse who is sore or stiff in the muscles and joints. Is most suitable for al equine and canine species. HAWTHORN BERRIES – Good for the treatment of foot disorders, such as navicular and laminitis. High in Rutin (vitamin P). Improves circulation. Feed 2 to 3 tablespoons daily vary according to size of animal. HERBAL TONICS - My prescribed herbal medicine mixed accordingly to the patients needs. HOOF OIL – Prevents hooves from drying out. Helps to make the hoof more flexible, which accelerates growth and reduces cracks. Made from a combination of comfrey, raw linseed and olive oils. Apply by spraying or brushing around the cornet band and al owing to run down the hoof. Only needs to be applied 2 to 3 times weekly depending on the condition of the horses hooves. HOPS - This herb is a nervine herb which is one of the major ingredients in beer making. In the olden days people would often give their horses some beer as a gentle sedative or a tonic. This herb is quite effective given as a tea to help calm the nervous horse who is not sensitive to camomile. HORSETAIL – This herb is the highest source of silica. It is also high in magnesium, phosphorous and calcium. Used for healing of bone injury and the treatment of degenerative joint disease. It strengthens bones and bone repairs and is specific for structural faults such as spurs and chips. Feed 1 smal handful daily vary accordingly to the horses size. HOOF REPAIR DRESSING – Intensive treatment for bad hooves. Must be applied on a daily bases. LINSEEDS – These contain high concentrations of linolenic acid, omega 3 and omega 6. Linseed is very good for the health of the digestive tract, ligaments and tendons, the immune system and prevention and treatment of arthritis. Need to be boiled. Feed approximately ½ to 1 cup daily depending on the size of the horse. Keep in mind that it can make some horse quite loose in their manure. Vary amount if this happens. MARE MIX – NORMAL CYCLE - A mix for the mare that cycles regularly but displays “bitchy” behaviour. Feed 1 handful daily. IRREGULAR CYCLE – For the mare that can come into season at the drop of a hat. Treatment is usual y only required for one cycle. Feed 1 handful daily. MILLET-LINSEED PORRIDGE MIX – Improves coat condition and shine as wel as helping to build a good towline without making the horse hot. Feed 1 cup. Needs to be boiled. MSM POWDER – Referred to as Methyl – sulfonyl-methane. MSM wil improve joint flexibility, reduce stiffness and swel ing, improve circulation and cel vitality. It wil also reduce pain associated with systemic inflammatory disorders such as arthritis. Wil break up calcium deposits, reduce scar tissue which further aggravates the condition increasing pain and decreasing mobility. Maintence dose is 250mg to 2000mg per body weight X 1 daily. Increase dosage to 2000 – 5000mg per day for more serious conditions. Divide larger dosage evenly over the day. MUGWORT – Used for horses that are extremely sensitive and are usual y over reactive to things such as sight, sound, touch, smel , light wind and even barometric pressure. Chestnuts and thoroughbreds are prime candidates who usual y benefit from mugwort. Feed two handfuls into feed daily. NETTLE – High in iron and vitamin C. Some horses may react with nettle rash – if so discontinue use. Good to feed if horse is intolerable of lucerne and green feed is needed. Wil produce dappling in the coat of a brown horse. Feed 1 handful daily. PASSIFLORA (Passionflower) – This is good for horses that are general y anxious, apprehensive and never seem to be at ease. It can also be used on mares that are being treated for hormonal problems. Feed 1 handful daily. PSYLLIUM HUSKS – Good for moving sand through the gut. An ideal herb to be fed during dry conditions. Must be fed alternate days of weeks to achieve best results. RASPBERRY LEAVES – High in folic acid. Good for a mare’s reproductive fitness and health. Feed for a month before conception. Feed 1 handful daily RESCUE REMEDY – Should be used in situations where shock, panic, trauma and stress of any kind are caused. The product is to be syringed on to the tongue or into the feed. Best used immediately after any accidents. Just as effective on humans and animals and a must to have on hand. Give 3 to 5 drops x 3 daily. ROCKSALT – Is pink in colour and has the texture and structure of quartz. It provides sodium natural y to the body. ROSEHIPS – Very high in vitamin C and a vast array of other vitamins as wel as a high mineral content including Iron, Copper and Cobalt. Wil also help fight infections, boost coat and hoof condition and an excel ent form of biotin. Feed 2 tablespoons daily. Increase to ½ cup make into a tea and pour over the feed if the horse is sick. ROSEMARY CREAM – Excel ent for the treatment of greasy heel. SEAWEED MEAL – Is a very good way of feeding the majority of minerals necessary for good health economical y. It contains calcium, zinc, sulphur, magnesium, manganese’s, copper, iron, iodine, cobalt, boron, molybdenum and many other trace elements. There are rare individuals who are seaweed intolerant, due to sensitivity to the iodine content. Feed 2 tablespoons daily. SLIPPERY ELM POWDER – Is exceedingly high in mucilage and nutrients and is specifical y indicated for scouring and the prevention and treatment of gut ulceration. External y it is very good to use for poulticing, as it is soft and sticky when water is added and can be used on its own or with other ingredients. Feed 2 tablespoons daily. TENDON & BONE REAPAIR MIX – Is a combination of rescue remedy, comfrey, seaweed meal, porridge mix and yarrow. It is a mix for the strengthening of muscles, regrowth of attachment points and the repairing of stretched and damaged ligaments and bones, as wel as relieving inflammation and pain caused through accidents. It is also an excel ent product for horses suffering with some form of arthritis. Feed 1 cup x 2 daily for the first 3 months and then reduce to 1 cup daily as part of an every day diet. ULCER MIX – Used as a treatment for gut ulceration. A blend of herbs that wil help to put a lining back on the stomach as wel as control loose bowel motions. Wil also help to heal if bleeding has accrued due to bad ulceration. VALERIAN – Has anti-spasmodic qualities and useful as a mix for stringhalt and tying up. Can also be a laxative and can make horses with loose manure worse. Known to be swabbed. Feed approximately ¼ to ½ cup daily. Vary accordingly to size of horse. VERVAIN – Used as a sedative for horses that sweat, tremble or shake when nervous. Also excel ent for horses that are impatient, fiddly, fussy and pace around because they need company. Feed 1 handful x 2 daily. Only feed the amount prescribed, as feeding more doesn’t mean the herbs wil work more effectively and only results in wastage.
Herbs are often better fed when they have been made into a tea, also known as an infusion. It increases their potency. Infusions can be made from fresh or dried herbs, which are soft, such as the flowers or leaves. Usual y about 600ml of boiling water is poured onto 30 grams of herb and then left to infuse for about 15 minutes. The whole lot, including the herb dregs, can then be fed.
To use hard plant material such as roots, seeds, bark etc, a decoction should be made. This is made by pouring 750ml of cold water over 30 grams of the cut up material in a saucepan and set aside for 12 hours. Bring to the boil and simmer for 20 minutes. Strain before use. Teas and decoctions may be stored in the fridge for a couple of days.
Herbs are best kept in a cool, dry environment. Plastic should be avoided because it can cause sweating and therefore ruin the herbs.
When using Linseed it should always be boiled first before feeding. When boiling the porridge mix or linseeds, put the quantity required into a saucepan and cover with water. Bring to the boil and then let simmer for up to an hour. The linseeds wil cause a jel y type substance to form on the surface, when this occurs the mix should be ready. May be kept in the fridge for a few days.
