Crash Courses

About GLS: Founded in 1983, GLS German Language School is located centrally in Berlin and
welcomes ca. 1400 students every year from up to 60 nations. GLS is accredited locally by the Berlin
Senate, and internationally by the Swedish Ministry of Education. GLS, like the Goethe Institut, is an
official testing center for ZD Zertifikat Deutsch.
Intensive courses train German for everyday communication and are complemented by afternoon
activities and weekend excursions.

1. Lessons per week
30 lessons of German classes:
- 20 lessons / week à 45 min. international groups with max. 12 students per class - 10 lessons / week à 45 min. one to one tuition 2 hours seminar on German culture or a German movie with teacher introduction every Tuesday 2 half-day excursions in Berlin with GLS guide 1 full-day excursion in Berlin or to Hamburg, Dresden, Leipzig, Potsdam with GLS guide In addition to this, students have ample opportunity to practice their German with their German hosts: GLS arranges accommodation in Berlin households – single room, with a choice of self catering, bed & breakfast or half board. Students usually arrive on Sundays on GLS Campus or they meet their German host, and start classes Monday morning with a placement test, helping us to place them in one of 6 levels: SUMMER SEASON

GLS courses follow the Common European Framework issued by the European Commission for
language learning: with 6 levels from A 1 till C2. To include total beginners we added one more level:
A 0.
A0: complete beginner
A1: elementary I
A2: elementary II
B1: intermediate I
B2: intermediate II
C1: advanced I
C2: advanced II
All levels are taught all year round, with starting dates every Monday (except A0: starting dates once a month). A placement test, done in Berlin the very first day, will assess the appropriate course level. The placement test consists of a written as well as an oral part. A little exam every Friday helps students to check their progress. GLS prepares and registers students for all officially recognized exams such as ZD, ZMP, DSH, ZOP, KDS, GDS. Please note: If a student wants to do an exam while in Berlin, he or she should schedule their course according to exam dates available on the GLS website as well. 3. GLS Certificates & table for grade transcripts
Students finish courses with a GLS certificate, documenting course level, course duration and
describing the student´s language skills in detail. The certificate will give information on course
content.
4. Teachers, method, materials
Teachers:
- are native speakers between 26 and 45
- have an academic background with degrees – for example – in German language and/or literature
- have additionally teacher training
- most of them have been with GLS for many years
- are enthusiastic and give excellent communicative tuition
- combine the function of a coach and a teacher
- have expertise in other fields (photography, journalism, business consultancy etc) which inspire
their teaching and make them interesting people to talk to
Method:
Standard course: We teach in tandem, with 2 teachers resonsible for every class, and alternating at
every break. That way students get to hear more than one voice and speaking style.
- communicative approach with teachers animating students to speak as much as possible
- teachers continuously correct students and encourage them to repeat and do better
- German is the only language spoken in class, from the first day on
One to one: Students choose General German, Business German, German for Teachers, German for
Lawyers or German for Journalists
Materials (included in the course price):
- Text books: studio d, Themen aktuell (levels A0 – A2), Aspekte, Mittelpunkt, em (levels B1, B2, C1),
Oberstufenbuch (level C2) – we constantly monitor new publications and may employ additional text
books that seem appropriate
- Hand-outs like newspaper articles, literature etc.
- Multimedia-teaching with CDs, OHP, video and video camera
- For self study students can lend books and audio tapes from the library

Below please find information on the topics covered per level – having finished level B1, students are
fit to pass ZD Zertifikat Deutsch. Information on all language exams and a grafic helping to assess the
time it will take to reach any given level, please find under point 6.

Angaben zur eigenen bzw. zu fremden Personen Landeskunde (geographische Lage Deutschlands und der Bundesländer, Sehenswürdigkeiten, Geschäfte/Einkaufen und öffentliche Einrichtungen Aussagesatz, Fragesatz, Imperativ-Satz (Post, Bank) Verkehrsmittel und Verbindungen (U-Bahn) Du kannst vertraute, alltägliche Ausdrücke und ganz einfache Sätze verstehen und verwenden, die auf die Befriedigung konkreter Bedürfnisse zielen. Du kannst dich und andere vorstellen und anderen Leuten Fragen zu ihrer Person stellen - z. B. wo sie wohnen, was für Leute sie kennen oder was für Dinge sie haben - und kannst auf Fragen dieser Art Antwort geben. Du kannst dich auf einfache Art verständigen, wenn die Gesprächspartnerinnen oder Gesprächspartner langsam und deutlich sprechen und bereit sind zu helfen. Berlin und andere deutsche Städte (Lage, Größe, Nebensätze: dass, weil, wenn, obwohl Verschiedenen Kulturen Du kannst Sätze und häufig gebrauchte Ausdrücke verstehen, die mit Bereichen von ganz unmittelbarer Bedeutung zusammenhängen (z. B. Informationen zur Person und zur Familie, Einkaufen, Arbeit, nähere Umgebung). Du kannst dich in einfachen, routinemäßigen Situationen verständigen, in denen es um einen einfachen und direkten Austausch von Informationen über vertraute und geläufige Dinge geht. Du kannst mit einfachen Mitteln die eigene Herkunft und Ausbildung, die direkte Umgebung und Dinge im Zusammenhang mit unmittelbaren Bedürfnissen beschreiben temporate Nebensätze: als, wenn, Berühmte Persönlichkeiten (Biografien und Konjunkiv II (würde + Infinitiv) Wetter (Prognosen, Sprüche, Wetterfühligkeit) Beziehungen (Partnersuche, Kontaktanzeigen, Krankheiten (Medizin, Heilmittel, Alternative Heilmethoden) Du kannst die Hauptpunkte verstehen, wenn klare Standardsprache verwendet wird und wenn es um vertraute Dinge aus Arbeit, Schule, Freizeit usw. geht. Du kannst die meisten Situationen bewältigen, denen man auf Reisen im Sprachgebiet begegnet. Du kannst über Erfahrungen und Ereignisse berichten, Träume, Hoffnungen und Ziele beschreiben und zu Plänen und Ansichten kurze Begründungen oder Erklärungen geben. Nebensätze: so dass, so.dass, da, statt Berufe („internationale“ Arbeitswelt, Nebenjob, temporale Nebensätze: seit, bis, während, „Doppeljobber“, Bewerbungen, Stellensuche) Konflikte und Lösungen (Partnerschaft, Beruf, Gemeinsinn statt Egoismus (z.B. Umweltschutz( Medienwelten (Fernsehen, Lesen, Zeitungen, Sport Du kannst die Hauptinhalte komplexer Texte zu konkreten und abstrakten Themen verstehen; verstehst im eigenen Spezialgebiet auch Fachdiskussionen. Du kannst dich so spontan und fließend verständigen, dass ein normales Gespräch mit Muttersprachlern ohne größere Anstrengung auf beiden Seiten gut möglich ist. Du kannst dich zu einem breiten Themenspektrum klar und detailliert ausdrücken, einen Standpunkt zu einer aktuellen Frage erläutern und die Vor- und Nachteile verschiedener Möglichkeiten angeben. K. Du kannst dich spontan und fließend ausdrücken, ohne öfter deutlich erkennbar nach Worten suchen zu müssen. Du kannst die Sprache im gesellschaftlichen und beruflichen Leben oder in Ausbildung und Studium wirksam und flexibel gebrauchen. Du kannst dich klar, strukturiert und ausführlich zu komplexen Sachverhalten äußern und dabei verschiedene Mittel zur Textverknüpfung angemessen verwenden. Du kannst dich spontan, sehr flüssig und genau ausdrücken und auch bei komplexeren Sachverhalten feinere Bedeutungsnuancen deutlich machen.

To assess a student´s level and to find out how long he or she may need to reach any given level please proceed as follows: 1. assess the present level of German, using the level descriptions in the table above - lets say 2. define the level he or she would like to reach, for example C 1 3. add the lessons or weeks given in the table right below the level descriptions, starting from the present level up to the one desired - in this example the student would need 28 weeks (with 20 lessons each week) to get there 4. in order to speed up this process, the student can take a more intensive course with 30 • Zertifikat Deutsch (ZD)
