The Community Kitchen
What is CANstruction? - CANstruction, a charity committed to ending hunger, is using ‘one can’ as a
catalyst for change. Over 500 families in the Mondadnock Region access hunger relief programs
supported by The Community Kitchen Food Pantry. Local businesses, institutions, and organizations
donate food, finances, and time to construct monolithic sculptures made completely out of cans and non-
perishable items. Teams of 5 are organized to raise food donations. They then use these food donations
to design and build incredible sculptures. Some of these CANstructions are on display in the storefronts
of Main St. while others are constructed in the Keene State Student Center. At the end of the event, the
sculptures are deCANstructed, and food is donated to The Community Kitchen for use in the holiday food
pantry.
2013 CANstruction Voting Results
Best Meal: A Place at the table Movie Poster
The items used for this display represented a variety of different foods and spanned several food groups. The judges felt that the overall composition of the display made for the most balanced meal. Judges especially liked that all items used were organic. Structural Ingenuity: Everyone Deserves a Place at the Table
The judges noticed this sculpture had perhaps, the least amount of additional non-food structure. The dog seemed to have the most structural complexity, as each layer of cans changed orientation and location. The judges were also impressed with the delicate color of the peach cans and those cute little chairs! Honorable Mention: The United Bowl of America
The judges had a very difficult time choosing between Everyone Deserves a Place at the Table and The United Bowl of America to receive the award for Structural Ingenuity. The United Bowl of America certainly appears to be the very solid and strong, however, did not have the complex angles as Everyone Deserves a place at the Table. The judges were enamored by this sculpture as it depicted the reality of hunger in America, and America as a melting pot or mixing bowl. Best Use of Labels: Leaning Tower of Peas’a
The judges liked many aspects of this sculpture, however, the use of the labels to create a strong visual caught the judges attention. The judges noticed the careful attention made in choosing the correct cans with correct labels. The labels of the canned was obviously chosen to mimic the arched openings in the actual leaning tower of Pisa, it was successful and well done. Juror’s Favorite: A Place at the Table
This display best encompasses the overall theme of the 2013 CANstruction event. The team paid great attention to detail in their design and had several clever aspects to their sculpture. The QR barcode, made of salt and pepper packet, directs you to The Community Kitchen’s website when scanned with your phone. The one Nation under Fed was also created by using salt and pepper packets. They demonstrated creative use of labels and food items to depict a very strong visual and a sculpture that is extremely pleasing to look at. For these reasons, this team has one the Juror’s Favorite.
