In this publication you will find an A to Z listing of drugs made bymanufacturers who have patient assistance programs. Most majordrug companies provide free medications, but rarely, if everpublicize the programs.
Nearly 43 million Americans are lacking health care insurance,many sick people can not afford potentially life saving drugs.
Generally drug companies require a doctor’s consent to provide themedication and proof of the patient’s financial hardship. Eachmanufacturer has varying requirements that change frequently sothey can not be summarized for the purpose of this publication.
Though not widely known, drug companies have programs thatoffer many prescription drugs free of charge to poor and otherqualified groups that cannot afford them. However, these free drugprograms are being used by only a small number of people thatcould truly benefit from them.

Look up the drug name in the alphabetical listing (Pg. 6-23).
Located next to the drug name there is a number in parenthesis ( ).
This number cross references a pharmaceutical manufacturerscontact information (Pg. 24-31).
Pharmaceutical manufacturers’ names and programs changefrequently. If a drug that you use is not listed here ask yourpharmacist or physician for the name of the manufacturer, and thephone number. You owe it to yourself to find out if there is apatient assistance program and if you qualify for it.
How To Use This Booklet
Tips and Questions You Should Ask
Simply call the pharmaceutical manufacturer and ask them if theyhave a patient assistance program and ask what the requirementsare. Some companies require that you have a limited income or noinsurance coverage, while others require only that you get adoctor's referral. Frequently used names for these programs arereimbursement program, indigent patient program, compassionatecare program, medical needs program.
In most cases you will need your physician to request yourparticipation in a program by a phone call or letter from yourdoctor.
If your doctor refuses to call or does not believe the program willwork, contact the drug companies yourself and find out about theapplication process. You will still need a doctor to fill theapplication, but you can at least get the forms, and then encourageyour doctor to complete them. If your doctor still refuses, maybeyou can find another doctor who will.
Another cost saver is to ask your doctor if he/she has any samplesof the drugs that you have been prescribed . Many manufacturerssend free samples on a regular basis for doctors to give to theirpatients.
Find out how you will receive the prescription drugs, and how youcan get refills. Most companies send the medications directly toyour doctor. There have been some problems with delays inreceiving the drugs, so check to see what the company's shippingschedule is, and what you or your doctor should do if there is aproblem.
