Your ROTOSCOPE for February 16, 2012 for the Rotary Club of San Marino, California, USA YOUR MOST IMPORTANT VALENTINE: YOUR HEART DID YOU KNOW THAT HEART DISEASE is the #1 cause of death for women? – not cancer. Did you know that heart
disease kills one woman every minute in the United States? No? Neither did Lois Matthews, despite her medical training
and experience. Maybe most important, did you know that the symptoms of heart troubles are different for men and
women? No again? Better show up this Thursday, as the life you save may be your own or that of your Valentine.
DANIELLE DIETZ HAS information you should know. She’s coming from the American Heart Association, and she’ll bring
a short video to show. In just three minutes, this demonstrates the warning signs for women experiencing heart disease, including strokes. Danielle will also review the warning signs for males, and drill on what to do.
YOU READ LAST WEEK about the fit and strong U.S. Senator, only 51, who felt some strange tingles while exercising in
the Capitol gym, so drove himself to his physician (not so smart, but natural) to find out he was suffering a serious stroke.
He didn’t recognize the signs. This happens even more with females – they’ve heard the warning symptoms for men, they
feel different symptoms, and they’re too busy to check them out, or they think it’s something else. More than 500,000
women – a half-million, six times the capacity of the Rose Bowl – die each year of heart disease, often without seeking help.
NOW DON’T BE SCARED! Much can be done – if help is provided within that “Golden Period”. But the symptoms do
differ by sex, and are so very important to recognize – and act when they’re noted. To help spread the word, the American
Heart Association and the American Stroke Association – they’re now merged as one, as they’re so interrelated – are
pushing GO RED FOR WOMEN! this year, in a campaign using the CIRCLE OF RED – women who are aware of the symptoms and who pledge to act if these signs are recognized.
LOIS IS EAGER FOR YOU to show up at Rotary this Thursday, men and women, to pick up a flier and to watch the three
minutes of video that Danielle will provide, and to learn these important keys of problems that can hit any time, either sex,
U.S. Senators, almost any age, any time. And of course Lois would be delighted if you’d bring a guest to help spread the
word of RED FOR WOMEN, being part of your own CIRCLE OF RED.

NEXT WEEK IS OUR FOURTH – or maybe our fifth, but who cares? – Annual All-Rotary Chili Contest – with
generous rewards for the best-in-show. GREG CUSTER is managing this grand event, and reports he has several
contestants but can still accommodate one or two more challengers. Want to try your skill at cooking up a batch? Please contact Greg at Whittier Trust, 626-441-5111. Then gather some beans, beef, spices, rattlesnake, road kill, whatever you
use to make yours a distinctive, award-winning chili. Greg will describe the awards, conditions, and gallons he needs from
you to feed our gang on February 23rd. With no more pharmacy in town, go buy your Pepcid or Rolaids elsewhere.
